Reducing Shaw Binary’s Corporate Footprint

By: Lacey Shaw

With the advent of new technology the world keeps getting smaller, and the smaller the world gets the more aware people have become that our presence impacts the environment. The new technology also creates new and improved means to help lessen corporations and individuals impact on the environment. In this spirit, Shaw Binary Systems, Inc. (SBSI) announces the 2007 plan to reduce our corporate footprint.

SBSI has always been concerned with the community and how the company is impacting the community and has already spent several years trying to reduce how we are effecting the environment. Every monitor in the SBSI office is a flat screen monitor, which utilize less energy, to run and fewer materials to create. The monitors are also setup to auto sleep after five minutes of non-use. SBSI uses recycled paper products and the employees recycle paper aluminum cans and toner cartridges to reduce waste. Lights in the office are turned off when they are not needed whether it is after or during business hours. Furthermore, the lights in the SBSI office are florescent lights, which is more efficient than other lighting options. Whenever a document can be left as a digital document instead of printed out into a paper document, the employees leave it paperless. Finally, SBSI buys materials in bulk whenever possible to cut down on packaging and delivery.

The various programs SBSI has in place to reduce the companies corporate impact are a great start, but the employees and Chief Officers feel it is not enough. That is why SBSI is announcing the 2007 corporate footprint reduction plan. By the end of 2007, SBSI will utilize virtual servers. Virtual servers allow multiple servers to be installed on the same server, much like various users can have the same profile on the same computer, which uses less energy. Although SBSI already utilizes recycled paper products, the office will use only 100% recycled paper and will change over to other recycled paper products, such as paper towels, file folders and envelopes. A low-flow faucet aerator will be installed in the SBSI kitchen to reduce the amount of water used. Whenever possible, SBSI will purchase batteries that can be recharged and reused instead of disposable batteries, reducing corporate waste. SBSI will request junk mail not by sent to the company, which will help to reduce waste. Finally, the company will donate money to a carbon fund to help offset some of SBSI’s corporate carbon use that cannot be reduced.

If you or your company are interested in reducing your footprint, and we at SBSI encourage you to do so, you can donate to a carbon fund at www.carbonfootprint.com. To stop junk mail, write to: Mail Preference Service, Direct Marketing Association, 11 West 42nd St., PO Box 3861, New York, NY 10163-3861. You can also implement the rest of SBSI’s 2007 corporate footprint reduction plan to ease your impact on the planet we all share.
