SBSI Employees Give Back

A Little Caring Goes a Long Way

By: Amy Smith

As technology expands, the way we do business progresses. With new cellular developments an executive can be out of the office and still respond to emails. Thanks to attempts to farther digital storage, companies can now fit one thousand gigabytes of data on one hard drive. The advances that the technology industry is making are creating a smaller world and it is important to remember those we share the world with.

Thus, in staying with Shaw Binary Systems’ (SBSI) corporate mission to not forget about those around us and give back to the community, the employees of SBSI are spending the next month donating linens, umbrellas, packaged food, wheelchairs, canes, hygiene products, books, and clothing to Alpha Project. SBSI has held donation drives in previous years, giving the staff various opportunities to donate to local groups, such as Alpha Project and the San Diego Food Bank. This year, we are hoping to beat previous donation efforts and are challenging the staff to fill not one, but multiple boxes with charitable contributions.

The Alpha Project is a local San Diego organization that specializes in programs to help homeless men, women and youths. Projects the Alpha Project is involved in include: a Day Center that offers showers, social service referrals, mail and message service, laundry facilities, safe storage, mental health counseling, substance abuse recovery meetings, and job opportunities; two residential treatment programs for homeless men recovering from various addictions; provide workforce housing in collaboration with various local companies that hire Alpha Project participants; supply medical aid to homeless youth; winter homeless shelters that operate from November until April; special needs housing; and counseling.

SBSI first got involved with Alpha Project in 2003 when a client introduced SBSI to the Alpha Project volunteer program. Immediately SBSI teamed up with the Alpha Project to gather items for homeless men and women during the winter of 2003. Ever since then the employees of SBSI have been participating in charitable efforts to assist the Alpha Project organization and are excited at the opportunity to help the local homeless men and women of San Diego through the current donation drive.

If you or your company would like to get involved with Alpha Project visit their website at www.alphaproject.org to find out about exciting donation drives, volunteer opportunities or ways to make monetary contributions. The Alpha Project is always collecting food, clothing and hygiene products and has drop off locations in Hillcrest, North Park and Vista. If you do not live in San Diego or would like to collaborate with another association, there are a plethora of organizations like Alpha Project throughout the United States and all those at SBSI encourage you and your company to remember about those who inhabit this world with us and to get involved in your community.
